The tire exploded and the steering wheel jerked to the right.
“Shit! Hold on!”
“Henryyy…!”
He jerked it back quick, but not too far. The ass end spun around anyway, and all at once they were rolling backward into the opposite lane.
“Jesus Christ!” Henry shouted as a semi was bearing down on them.
Alice was panting already as it swerved around their front end, and the next second her eyes were closed, her head clunking into the window.
Another car wasn’t so quick, or just didn’t have room. It struck the trunk on Henry’s side and sent them spinning onto the shoulder, causing Henry to hit his head on the side window, cracking the glass.
But he seemed alright. More importantly, they were off the highway now.
“Alice! Alice, are you alright?”
“I— I think so. What happened?”
He gazed back out the windshield, shaking his head. “I think Jesus heard me.”
